If your back hurts right now, just looking at the structure of the True Back traction device can make your back pain worse.
Stretching your back when you’re in pain is not an easy decision.
But:
What if it really works?
What if you could say goodbye to all that tension, stiffness, and pain in your back in just a few minutes a day – using a simple orthopedic back stretcher?

Overview
True Back Review
The True Back non-powered traction device is a convenient little home back stretching device.
It allows your back to be passively stretched in opposite directions while being supported in the correct position.
- Size – “24 x 10″ x 4″ (I find it easy to pick and store, takes almost no storage space)
- Weight – 4 pounds
So, how does it work?
How Does the True Back Work?
When you lie on the device, the 30 suspension points molded into the center rails support your body weight and create pressure on the muscles on each side of your spine.
This pressure allows the muscles to completely relax, which increases blood flow.
It decompresses your spine and you are passively stretching in opposite directions while being supported in the correct position.
The True Back non-powered orthopedic traction device decompresses your spine and takes away all the tension from your back.
When you get off it, you have a great feeling of renewed well-being.
Who Can Benefit From the True Back?
The True Back can be helpful for anyone suffering from:
- Back muscle knots
- Sciatica
- Back pain after exercising (it can prevent the pain if you use it before exercising!)
- Back pain from prolonged sitting and standing
- Posture-related back pain
- Herniated/bulging disc
Pro Tip:
You can find cheaper back stretchers, such as the North American Back Stretcher, but this one doesn’t have the pressure points that increase blood circulation.
The True Back offers a mild form of spinal decompression.
If you need stronger traction, I would recommend you consider a high-quality inversion table.
What are the Benefits of Using the True Back?
The True Back doesn’t just temporarily relieve back pain. If you use it properly and every day, you’ll enjoy these benefits:
- Improved flexibility and range of motion
- Better sleep
- Improved posture
- Stress relief
- Increased energy.
Also, the True Back is an effective back pain prevention tool, not just a pain reliever.
What is the Treatment Time with the True Back?
You’ll only need a few minutes a day (3-5 minutes) to get the remarkable benefits of True Back.
But if you stop using it every day, you can’t expect lasting results.
The secret is to keep using it every day, if only for a few minutes.
- Use it before you go to sleep if you have back pain at night.
- Use it before and after exercising to prevent injury and back pain.
- Use it whenever you feel a “back attack” is coming to stop it dead in its tracks.
True Back Downsides
The True Back is a bit long for me, so my head rests on the hard end of it and I need something for padding.
Other than that I couldn’t find any other downsides.
Where Can You Buy the True Back?
I’ve checked the prices both on Amazon and the True Back website.
The price is usually lower on Amazon ($123 right now).
Is it Painful to Use the True Back?
The stretch is quite strong, but that’s the point of having a stretching device – to give you a stronger stretch passively than you can do on your own.
Though it can be painful to lie on at first, when your back relaxes and “adjusts” (you’ll feel that nice back crack), it can be extremely helpful.
I can’t say that this is “comfortable,” but I think the hard protrusions with their nubs are designed not only to grip your back but also to poke in and “force” your muscles to relax.
Keep the foams in place and you can use a small blanket on it until you get used to it.
If you want to take the stretching down a notch you can use a small pillow under your head.
Does the True Back Come With Instructions?
Yes, the True Back comes with an instructional DVD, make sure you watch it to use it correctly.
How Durable is the True Back?
The True Back is made of solid plastic and you’ll need a hammer or a big (and angry) dog to cause any damage to it.
There are no parts that will need replacement ever and it can last indefinitely.
How High is the Highest Lift?
The True back is about 3.5 inches from the floor at the highest point.
Conclusion
The True Back is a well-constructed and effective home back stretcher. It can be painful but it results in almost immediate pain relief and a great sense of renewed well-being.

I am 73 years old now and for 40years I have been in the building industry which obviously involves a lot of bending.I also enjoyed a range of highly active sports, which of course takes its toll after a while. over the years I have bought a number of gadgets to eliminate pain, none of them has done as good a job as the true back . A marvelous piece of equipment.
I’m 74 now and was diagnosed at age 17 with “healed juvenile epiphysitis” of the two lower vertebrae. My lower two spinal discs were herniated by the sharp edges of the 2 vertebrae and lost their fluid. I had to quit playing high school sports, and I had lower back pain most of my adult life, having the continual need for chiropractic care. Once, I couldn’t even get out of my car without help, to go into my chiropractor’s office.
Then, (years ago) I found True Back. It stretches out those 2 lower vertebrae painlessly and allows me to live a normal life again. Whenever I feel lower back pain return, I use my True Back once or twice a day until I return to almost pain-free living again. It also has allowed me to avoid having back surgery. I just can’t say enough positive things about how it has affected my life.
Thomas, thank you so much for sharing this with us :)
I can also recommend this product as having saved me hundreds of dollars.
I had been in agony for years after several falls until I saw this on an infomercial here in New Zealand. osteopaths, manipulators, Chiropractors, medication hospitals, etc. I will never be completely cured but I can control the level of pain.
Sorry Diane was rude to you – does nothing for her reputation. I also put a slim pillow under my head as I am only 5ft nothing.
Elcee,
Thanks for sharing your experience and taking the time to do that…
I appreciate it!:)
Meital, 3 years have passed since I last commented and I need to share that I hardly use the True Back now; only when I have done some physical work. In fact, in the last year or more I would be surprised if I used it a 1/2 dozen times. I have even loaned it to a local Dr!
I hope you have found it beneficial. I never mentioned in the message above that I could lie on it for 20 minutes so whether that helped or not I am not sure! Some people get put off due to the pressure on either side of the pain but I find it is no worse than when a sports chiropractor puts pressure on a certain spot and holds for some time. It is a ‘good’ pain if that makes sense. No, my true back is loaned to others to try when it is not gathering dust!
So does this mean that it helped you so much that you don’t need it anymore, or that it hasn’t helped you? I didn’t understand…
Thanks for the update! :)
Hi Melanie:)
The True Back spine decompression device can be a great help for your suspected pinched nerve, but I would also add a daily walk of at least half an hour to get a real improvement in your back problem. You don’t have to exercise, but just take a nice walk every day, you’ll be amazed how much this can help.
Thanks for your review Meital!
I’m thinking of purchasing this or something similar. I know there was a as seen on tv store here in Hawaii that sells something like that.
I’ve been afraid of working out during my first trimester. It’s my first baby so I’m being extra careful :)
But because I haven’t been working out and stretching I’ve developed some type of pinch nerve in my lower back that would come and go and so far this device looks pretty safe and decent to use.
Thanks for sharing some great info!
Melanie
